Cursor runs Cursor agents in parallel. Synapse links agents across vendors. Cursor's Agents Window puts local, worktree, cloud and SSH agents in one sidebar, /multitask runs async subagents, and Cursor Projects (beta) adds a coordinator that delegates work. They can use Claude or GPT models, but the agent is always Cursor's. Subagents start with a clean context and report only to their parent. Synapse puts Claude Code, Codex, Cursor Agent and others on one canvas, lets linked agents message each other, and injects Claude and Codex context on each prompt. Synapse is free, MIT and needs no account. Cursor is far more complete as an IDE and agent workspace.

What Cursor's multi-agent features are
Cursor is an AI code editor built on VS Code. Cursor 2.0 (October 2025) added multiple agents with worktrees. Cursor 3, released on 2 April 2026, added the Agents Window, which Cursor calls "a unified workspace for building software with agents".
- Agents Window. Local, worktree, cloud and remote SSH agents in one sidebar. Worktree agents "run agents in isolated Git checkouts". You can hand off between cloud and local, review diffs, stage, commit, open PRs, and use an integrated browser.
/multitask(Cursor 3.2, 24 April 2026). In the changelog's words: "Cursor will run async subagents to parallelize your requests instead of adding them to the queue."- Subagents. Built-in Explore and Browser, custom ones in
.cursor/agents/, foreground or background, one level of nesting, a model per subagent. They share the parent's checkout by default, with worktree or cloud isolation on request. - Cursor Projects (beta, 10 September 2026). A coordinator agent plans and delegates to subagents, cloud agents and local agents, with shared context across machines and triggers from Slack, schedules and PR activity.
- Remote control of local agents from iOS since 6 October 2026, and self-hosted machines for cloud agents.
People like it. One Hacker News commenter on the Cursor 3 launch wrote: "Cursor has better cloud agents than Claude. The multi-agent experience is better, the worktree management is better."
What Synapse is
Synapse is not an editor and does not run agents. It puts every live coding agent on your machine on one canvas, grouped by git repo, by reading Claude Code's session registry and scanning processes for every other CLI. Nothing needs to be wrapped or relaunched.
Drag from agent A to agent B and B gets A's context. On each prompt a hook injects what A said since last time, up to 8,000 characters per link. Linked agents can message each other through six MCP tools, a CLI and a skill.
How Cursor agents talk to each other
Precisely, from Cursor's docs:
- Subagents get a prompt from the parent and return their final message. "Subagents start with a clean context." Background subagents write output to
~/.cursor/subagents/, which the parent can read. The docs do not describe direct messaging between subagents. - Cursor Projects is hub and spoke. The coordinator holds shared context and delegates. Workers report back to it.
- Across vendors, Cursor can call Claude or GPT models, but a Claude Code or Codex session cannot link to or message a Cursor agent. We found no evidence that the Agents Window hosts third-party CLI agents.
Synapse works between running agents instead of under one parent:
- Links are directional and stay in place. Draw Claude Code to Codex and Codex reads Claude's recent conversation on every prompt.
- Any two linked agents can message each other, without a coordinator in the middle.
- Cursor Agent is on Synapse's supported list. Today it shows up on the canvas and can send and receive messages through the
synapse_inboxMCP tool, but Synapse cannot read its conversation yet. So a link into Cursor Agent works for messages, while a link from Cursor Agent will not inject its context. Context is readable for Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI. - Messages are pulled. An idle agent does not wake up when a message arrives.
Pricing, accounts and lock-in
Cursor changed its pricing on 12 October 2026 with "The X Subscription", which bundles Grok, Cursor and X Premium. From the pricing page, checked on 16 October:
- Free: "Limited agent requests".
- Plus, $8 a month: "Only Grok models are available on this plan".
- Premium, $30 a month: cloud agents and automations, "Third-party models at API list price".
- Super $100, Ultra $200, Teams from $30 per user, Enterprise custom.
- "Third Party model usage in Cursor is not included in the monthly prices shown and must be purchased separately."
The change drew criticism on Cursor's own forum, where one user called it "the worst change I have seen you guys make." SpaceX announced an agreement to acquire Cursor's maker, Anysphere, on 16 June 2026. Cursor is proprietary and needs an account for AI features.
Synapse is MIT licensed, free, with no account. Links and messages live in ~/.synapse, and it makes no network calls. It does not sell or route models: each agent keeps using whatever plan or key it already has.
Where Cursor is ahead
- A full IDE and agent workspace. Editor, language tooling, diffs, PR flow, integrated browser, cloud VMs, cloud and local handoff. Synapse has none of this.
- Mature worktree management, praised by users on Hacker News.
- A coordinator. Cursor Projects plans and delegates across local and cloud agents. Synapse links agents but does not plan for them.
- Triggers and remote control. Slack, GitHub and Linear starts, scheduled runs and iOS control. Synapse multiplayer is in development and it has no mobile app.
- Maturity. Cursor is a large, established product. Synapse is new, built in October 2026, and macOS first.
If you live in one editor and want it to run all your agents, Cursor is the stronger tool.
Using Synapse with Cursor
A common setup is Cursor for editing plus Claude Code or Codex in a terminal. Synapse keeps those in sync:
- Install Synapse: clone the repo, run
node install.mjs && npm start. The installer wires an MCP server into every agent CLI it finds, backing up each config first. - Restart running agents so they pick up the MCP server and hooks.
- Open the canvas at localhost:4747. Claude Code, Codex and Cursor Agent processes show up as nodes.
- Link Claude Code to Codex both ways so each sees the other's recent work.
- Link Claude Code to Cursor Agent so Cursor Agent can receive messages. Have Cursor Agent call
synapse_inboxandsynapse_sendto reply. - Keep Cursor's subagents and
/multitaskfor fan-out inside Cursor.
Who should pick which
- Pick Cursor if you want one editor to run, review and ship agent work, and Cursor's agent is the one you use.
- Add Synapse if you split work between Cursor and Claude Code or Codex and are tired of copying context between them, or if you want peer links with no account.
- Use both if you like Cursor as an editor and also run CLI agents next to it.
FAQ
What is the Cursor Agents Window?
The Agents Window, added in Cursor 3 on 2 April 2026, is a single workspace that lists local, worktree, cloud and remote SSH agents in one sidebar, with diffs, commits and PRs. It runs Cursor's own agent.
What does /multitask do in Cursor?
Since Cursor 3.2 in April 2026, /multitask makes Cursor run async subagents to parallelize your requests instead of queueing them. The subagents start with a clean context and report back to the parent.
Can Cursor subagents talk to each other?
Cursor's documentation does not describe direct peer to peer messaging between subagents. Each subagent returns its result to its parent, and Cursor Projects uses a coordinator that delegates. Synapse lets any two linked agents message each other directly.
Can I use Cursor and Claude Code together?
Yes, side by side, but Cursor does not share context with a Claude Code session. Synapse links them: Claude Code and Codex can see each other's recent conversation, and Claude Code can message Cursor Agent. Synapse cannot read Cursor Agent's own conversation yet.
What changed in Cursor pricing in October 2026?
On 12 October 2026 Cursor introduced the X Subscription. Plus is $8 a month with Grok models only, Premium is $30 with third-party models at API list price, and third-party model usage is billed separately from the monthly price.
Is Synapse a Cursor alternative?
Not as an editor. Synapse does not edit code or run agents. It is a free, open source layer that links the agents you already run, including Cursor Agent, Claude Code and Codex.
